I was so frustrated, I was sure it had been labour but we could no longer stay on the delivery ward so we were sent home. To my great disappointment by 9am my contractions started to ease off. #SELFDEFIANT LOCKED IN ESCAPE HOSPITAL FULL#We went to the cafeteria and I piled down a full English with a pot of tea. The contractions continued with a gentle rhythm but the nurse wasn’t sure I was in established labour. So I listened to the radio, as Avril Lavigne sang for the fifth time that night… ![]() We tried to tune the telly but the only channels showed scenes of the war in iraq, it wasn’t something I wanted to watch as we welcomed our newborn. We were shown to our delivery room, could have done with a lick of paint, new floor and some new furniture, but that’s what you get on the NHS. On the labour ward there’s a calmness about the place swishing of midwives down the corridors, nervous dad’s dropping coins into the coffee machine, others talking in hushed tones on the phone. Hospitals are weird places at night so quite but for the gentle clunks of lifts and the shuffle of feet with cleaning trolleys. 3am and they’re 5 minutes apart, I gently woke Stew who jumped into action, phoned his parents to look after our son, and suddenly I’m being whisked to hospital in the darkness. #SELFDEFIANT LOCKED IN ESCAPE HOSPITAL SERIES#I was getting a series of contractions as you do in late pregnancy, a practice, “false labour”, although this time they appeared to be intensifying. I couldn’t get comfortable in bed, I couldn’t get comfortable in this armchair but sleep didn’t look likely, so better not to disturb Stew.
